Some 1,700 colleges removed standardized test requirements during the pandemic, a move seen by many students as an opportunity to "level up" on their scholastic choices, The New York Times reports.

This read showcases the continued stratification of higher education and American's belief that brand will land you not only success but happiness.

As both a graduate and proponent of small, nurturing colleges, I find this notion not only inaccurate but tiresome. Know this: Personal and professional success is crafted by the curious student who makes the college experience her own and harnesses the opportunities offered.

Moreover, applying to so-called "reach" schools is an expensive, defeating time suck.

Instead, focus on colleges that meet you where you are academically. Then, find cultures you love with price tags you can actually afford.
